Ruby on Rails is getting a lot of press lately, but is it really just hype or is there something to this beast?
Richard Vowles of Developers Inc Ltd will be talking about how Ruby on Rails compares to J2EE, having built web sites in both technologies. We will examine the concepts of convention over configuration, the libraries that Rails provides you, have a look at what concepts and constructs Ruby uses and where is is good and where it is bad. We will talk through how Rails works, scaffolding, what Rails consists of and talk a bit deeper about its underlying implementation with reference back to Java applications.
This isn't a one sided "Ruby on Rails is fantastic" fan boy seminar, you will (hopefully) learn things that will help you better understand if (at all) Ruby has a place in your business or development stack (as there are lot of other things to learn that may be more worthwhile for you).
I'll bring along a CD of stuff that people can take away with them with tools, database setup and documentation that may help get you started if you feel so inclined.
Developers Inc Ltd (www.developers-inc.co.nz) is a reseller of Codegear (from Borland) products, focusing on Java, C++, Delphi, PHP, Ruby and InterBase. Development tools basically.
