SUMMARY:Scala + so just what is an Enterprise Service Bus and should I care
 ?
DESCRIPTION:Java Meetups > The Auckland Java Group\n\nAs announced at the l
ast Auckland JUG\, we will be starting the formal talks at 6:30pm. Discussi
on from 6-6:30 will be an open topic lead by James\, Richard or Robin.\n\nS
cala\n\nThe first talk will be by Anthony Stubbs who was unfortunately unab
le to present last time due to tonsillitis - on Scala\, dubbed as Java 3 or
the successor to Java by some. Scala is a strongly typed functional OO lan
guage hybrid that is designed to add functional programming capability to w
hat Java programmers already know - giving nicer syntax\, closures\, proper
ties\, DSL capabilities and a whole host of language best practices in a ni
ce\, tidy bundle. You can use Scala with your existing Java code as they in
teroperate (they both run on the JVM) and you may find that Scala will prov
ide you with that productivity boost your team is really looking for. We ar
e very pleased Anthony is able to present\, and if you are interested in th
e future of Java at all\, you should definitely expose yourself to Scala.\n
\nThe second talk is to be presented by our erstwhile President - James Bea
mish-White! Finally having managed to wrangle a talk from him\, he presents
on a topic that should interest all developers interested in integration a
nd long running processes that consist of many steps done by different peop
le.\n\nDeveloping By Numbers - Drawing an application with OpenESB\n\nOpenE
SB (https://open-esb.dev.java.net/) is - surprise surprise - an open source
Enterprise Service Bus. It is developed primarily by Sun\, and may in the
future merge with the Sun commercial integration product\, Sun Java CAPS. T
his talk will discuss a real life project using OpenESB\, the challenges\,
tribulations and frustrations of developing it\, and the reasons for choosi
ng (and not choosing) an ESB in general.\n\nAdditionally\, we'll have some
 background discussions on XML\, JAXB\, (https://jaxb.dev.java.net/ - the Ja
va binding framework that's getting built into the JDK)\, XML Annotations (
and more frustrations) and SOA (Severely Overused Acronym) in general.\n\nA
